How Does Solar Really Work?

Solar panels aren't magic, they're proven science that's been powering homes for decades. But how do they actually convert sunlight into savings? And does solar really make sense here in Northeastern Pennsylvania? We break down the technology, the data, and what separates a quality installation from a costly mistake.

The complete guide to understanding solar energy for homeowners in Wayne County, Pike County, and the surrounding Northeastern Pennsylvania region.

If you’re a homeowner in Honesdale, Hawley, Milford, Carbondale, Scranton, or anywhere across Northeastern Pennsylvania, you’ve probably noticed solar panels popping up on more and more rooftops. And you’ve probably wondered: How does this actually work? Is it really worth it here in Pennsylvania?

The short answer is yes but we don’t want you to take our word for it. At Buselli Solutions, we believe informed homeowners make the best decisions. That’s why we put this guide together: to give you a real, data-driven understanding of how solar panels convert sunlight into savings, why Pennsylvania is a better solar state than most people realize, and what separates a quality installation from a costly mistake.

The Science Behind the Panel

Solar panels generate electricity through a process called the photovoltaic (PV) effect. This phenomenon was first discovered by French scientist Edmond Becquerel in 1839. In plain terms, certain materials produce an electrical current when exposed to light. Modern solar panels take that principle and engineer it into a reliable, long-lasting power source for your home.

How Photovoltaic Cells Generate Electricity

Each solar panel is made up of dozens of individual photovoltaic cells, typically 60 cells in a residential panel. These cells are constructed from silicon, the same semiconductor material used in computer chips and the second most abundant element on Earth. Here’s the step-by-step process:

  1. Sunlight hits the panel. Sunlight is composed of tiny energy packets called photons. When these photons strike the silicon cells in a solar panel, their energy is absorbed by the semiconductor material.
  2. Electrons break free. That absorbed energy dislodges electrons from silicon atoms. The panel’s manufacturing process creates two layers of silicon, one positively charged (p-type) and one negatively charged (n-type), forming an internal electric field at the junction between them.
  3. Current flows. The electric field pushes the free electrons in one direction, creating a flow of direct current (DC) electricity. Metal contacts on the top and bottom of each cell capture that current.
  4. DC converts to AC. Your home runs on alternating current (AC), so an inverter converts the DC electricity from the panels into usable AC power. Modern microinverters handle this conversion at each individual panel for better efficiency and monitoring.
  5. Your home is powered. The converted electricity flows into your home’s electrical panel to power lights, appliances, HVAC systems, and everything else. Any excess power you don’t use is sent to the grid, earning you credits through net metering.

That’s it. No moving parts. No combustion. No emissions. Just photons hitting silicon and producing clean electricity, silently and reliably, for 25 years or more.

Solar in 2026: The Numbers That Matter

Solar technology has improved dramatically. A decade ago, most residential panels were about 15% efficient and cost roughly $8.70 per watt to install. Today’s panels are a different story entirely.

Solar Panels: Then vs. Now

The bottom line: solar panels are roughly 60% cheaper and 40% more efficient than they were just 15 years ago. A standard 400-watt panel, now the industry standard, can power your home at a fraction of what it would have cost a decade ago.

Does Solar Actually Work in Pennsylvania?

This is the question we hear most often. People assume Northeast PA is too cloudy, too snowy, or too far north for solar to make sense. The data tells a very different story.

Peak Sun Hours and Real-World Production

Solar production is measured in “peak sun hours” (PSH), the number of hours per day where sunlight intensity reaches 1,000 watts per square meter, the standard at which panels are rated. Pennsylvania averages approximately 3.9 to 4.4 peak sun hours per day, depending on your exact location. That’s more than enough to make solar a strong investment.

Here’s what may surprise you: Pennsylvania homeowners often see better financial returns on solar than homeowners in sunnier states. Why? Because Pennsylvania has higher electricity rates (averaging 17.8 cents per kWh, with PPL customers paying 19.5 cents or more), strong net metering policies, and an active SREC (Solar Renewable Energy Credit) market. Every kilowatt-hour your panels produce saves you more money here than in many Sun Belt states with cheaper electricity.

What’s in a Complete Solar System?

A residential solar installation isn’t just panels on a roof. It’s an engineered system with several components that work together. Understanding each piece helps you evaluate what you’re getting, and what you should be getting.

Solar Panels (PV Modules)

Today’s residential panels are predominantly monocrystalline silicon, which offers the best combination of efficiency, durability, and cost. Premium panels now reach 22–24%+ efficiency and output 400–500 watts per panel. Most come with 25-year production warranties guaranteeing at least 80–85% of their original output. The panels are mounted either on your roof or on ground-mount racking in an open area of your property.

Inverters

Inverters convert the DC electricity produced by your panels into the AC power your home uses. There are two main types: string inverters (a single unit that handles all panels) and microinverters (small units attached to each individual panel). Microinverters, like the Enphase systems Buselli Solutions installs, offer several advantages: each panel operates independently, so shade on one panel doesn’t drag down the whole system, and you get panel-level monitoring so you can see exactly how each panel is performing.

Racking and Mounting

This is where installation quality really matters. Racking must be properly engineered for your specific roof type, angle, and local wind and snow loads. A poor mounting job can lead to leaks, structural issues, and underperformance. A great one is invisible from the street and built to withstand decades of Northeastern PA weather.

Battery Storage (Optional)

Battery backup systems store excess solar energy for use when the sun isn’t shining or during power outages. For our area, where storms and outages are a real concern, battery storage adds a valuable layer of energy independence. Buselli Solutions designs and installs both grid-tied and off-grid solar-plus-battery systems, giving homeowners complete control over their energy.

Monitoring System

Every system Buselli installs comes with a monitoring platform (typically Enphase) that lets you track your energy production in real time from your phone. You’ll know exactly how much electricity you’re generating, how much you’re using, and how much you’re sending to the grid, at any given moment.

The Financial Side: Incentives and Savings

Going solar is a significant investment, but Pennsylvania offers strong incentives that make the financial picture very attractive.

Why Your Installer Matters More Than Your Panels

Here’s something the national solar companies won’t tell you: the panels are only as good as the team that installs them. The quality of your racking, wiring, inverter configuration, roof penetrations, and permitting work will determine whether your system performs to its potential for 25 years or becomes a headache within five.

We’ve seen it firsthand. Homeowners call us after other companies, often out-of-state operations, installed their systems but never finished the job. They took the financing payment and disappeared. No commissioning. No monitoring setup. No certificate of completion. Just a homeowner left with panels on their roof and no one to call.

That’s not how we operate. And it’s not how solar should work.

Why Buselli Solutions Is the Clear Choice

Choosing a solar installer is choosing a long-term partner. Your system will be on your property for decades. You need to know the company that put it there will still be around and will still pick up the phone. Here’s what sets Buselli Solutions apart from every other option in our region:

  • Established since 1984. Buselli Solutions is a family business with over 40 years of roots in this community. We started as a plumbing, heating, and electrical contractor, and we’ve been installing solar for nearly 2 decades. We’re not a fly-by-night operation that popped up when solar got popular. We were here before it was trendy, and we’ll be here long after.
  • NABCEP Certified. This is the gold standard in the solar industry. The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners certification requires extensive training, documented field experience, and passing a rigorous exam covering everything from electrical code to system design. NABCEP is accredited to the internationally recognized ISO/IEC 17024 standard. It’s the highest credential a solar professional can hold and it’s the standard we hold ourselves to.
  • Unlike most competitors, Buselli offers an industry-leading 30-year warranty across all solar equipment, including roof attachments. This isn’t just a parts warranty, it covers parts, labor, and drive time, so you’re completely protected for 30 years. It’s also fully transferable. We understand the investment you’re making in your home and want to ensure both you and your system are protected.
  • Truly local. We’re headquartered right here in Honesdale, PA, and we serve homeowners within a 40-mile radius—Wayne County, Pike County, Lackawanna County, Susquehanna County, and the surrounding areas. When you call us, you talk to the people who will be on your roof. When you need service in five years, we’re a local call away, not an 800 number routed to another state.
  • Full-service energy solutions. Solar is just one piece of the puzzle. As licensed electricians and HVAC professionals, we understand your home’s entire energy picture. We install solar panels, ductless mini splits (as an Elite Fujitsu Installer), whole-house standby generators, and battery backup systems. That integrated approach means we can design a system that maximizes your savings and comfort, not just check a box.
