Storm Season Is Here: What Power Outages Do to Your HVAC System (and Why a Whole-Home Generator Matters)

Power outages don't just turn off your lights — surges and brownouts can damage your HVAC compressor, control boards, and appliances. Here's how storm season puts your home at risk, and why a whole-home standby generator is the smartest protection for NEPA homeowners.

Storm Season Is Here: What Power Outages Do to Your HVAC System (and Why a Whole-Home Generator Matters)

If you live in Northeast Pennsylvania, you already know what storm season nights look like, flickering lights, a hard reset on every clock in the house, and that uneasy quiet when the power finally drops. With more storms and expected outages rolling through the area all season, it’s worth understanding what those outages are actually doing to your home behind the scenes. Spoiler: the damage isn’t always obvious, and your heating and cooling system is often the first casualty.

The Real Danger Isn't Just Losing Power — It's How the Power Comes Back

Most people picture a power outage as a simple “lights off, lights on” event. The reality is messier. During a storm, the grid rarely drops cleanly. You get flickers, brief blackouts, brownouts (periods of low voltage), and then — when service is restored — a surge of electricity rushing back into your home.

That return surge is where a lot of expensive damage happens. A voltage spike traveling through your wiring can hit sensitive electronics in a fraction of a second, long before you’ve even gotten up to reset the microwave clock.

Why Your HVAC System Is So Vulnerable

Your heating and cooling system is one of the largest and most expensive electrical loads in your home, and modern systems are more sensitive than ever. Here’s what outages and surges can do to it:

Compressor damage. The compressor is the heart of your air conditioner or heat pump, and the costliest part to replace. When the power flickers repeatedly during a storm, the system can “short cycle,” rapidly shutting off and trying to restart. Restarting a compressor under low or unstable voltage forces it to draw excessive current, which overheats the windings and shortens its life. A single rough storm can take years off a compressor.

Brownouts are sneaky. A full outage is sometimes less harmful than a brownout. When voltage sags but doesn’t fully cut out, your compressor and motors keep trying to run on insufficient power. That strain generates heat and wear that can lead to a burnout, and you may not notice anything until the system fails on the next hot or cold day.

Fried control boards and electronics. Today’s high-efficiency systems, including the ductless mini-splits we install and service, rely on circuit boards, inverters, and smart thermostats. These components are precisely the kind of sensitive electronics a voltage surge loves to destroy. Replacing a control board is far from cheap, and a system can be knocked out entirely by one bad spike.

Blown capacitors and contactors. The smaller electrical components that help your system start and run are also surge-sensitive. A blown capacitor is a common post-storm service call and it leaves you without heating or cooling until it’s repaired.

It's Not Just Your HVAC

While your comfort system takes the biggest hit, a storm-related outage puts the rest of your home at risk too:

  • Refrigerators and freezers lose their cool fast, and a full freezer of spoiled food adds up quickly. Surges can also damage their compressors.
  • Sump pumps stop working at the exact moment you need them most — during a heavy storm — leaving your basement vulnerable to flooding.
  • Well pumps mean no running water for many NEPA homes when the power’s out.
  • Security systems, garage doors, internet, and home offices all go dark.
  • Medical equipment like CPAP machines and oxygen concentrators can become a genuine safety concern.

And here’s the one that worries us most for our neighbors: in winter, losing your heat for an extended period can lead to frozen and burst pipes. A single burst pipe can cause thousands of dollars in water damage — far more than the outage itself. In summer, losing your AC during a heat wave is a real health risk for older adults, infants, and pets.

The Fix: A Whole-Home Standby Generator

A portable generator and a tangle of extension cords might keep one appliance running, but it won’t protect the systems that matter most, and it won’t do anything while you’re away or asleep. A whole-home standby generator is a different category of protection entirely.

Here’s how it works: the generator sits permanently outside your home and connects to your electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch. When it senses an outage, even at 2 a.m. while you’re sleeping, it starts up automatically within seconds and powers your home from natural gas or propane. No cords, no manual switching, no refueling every few hours.

For your home, that means:

  • Your HVAC keeps running through the entire outage — no temperature swings, no risk of frozen pipes in winter, no dangerous heat in summer.
  • Your refrigerator and freezer stay cold, so you’re not throwing out a week’s worth of groceries.
  • Your sump pump keeps your basement dry during the very storm that knocked out the power.
  • Stable, consistent power flows to your sensitive electronics instead of the flickering, surging grid supply that damages compressors and control boards in the first place.

In short, a standby generator doesn’t just keep the lights on — it shields the expensive systems in your home from the rough, unstable power that storms create.

Pair It With Whole-Home Surge Protection

A generator handles the outages. To round out your protection, we often recommend pairing it with whole-home surge protection installed at your electrical panel. This adds a layer of defense against the voltage spikes that can travel through your wiring, giving your HVAC system and appliances another barrier between them and the grid’s worst behavior.

Don't Wait for the Next Outage

This weekend’s storms are a good reminder that outages aren’t a question of if in our area — they’re a question of when. The best time to protect your home is before the next one hits.

At Buselli Solutions, we’ve been serving homeowners across Northeast Pennsylvania and New York since 1984. As a local, family-owned, veteran-operated company, we’ll give you honest answers about whether a whole-home generator is right for your home — no pressure, no upsells, just solutions that last. We’re also a certified Generac installer, and we handle everything from sizing and installation to ongoing service.

If last night’s outage had you thinking about a backup plan, let’s talk.
